JUDY'S What's Happening!

If you want to plan ahead for some summer events on the Wild Rivers Coast that are much anticipated by locals and visitors then continue reading!  The annual Fourth of July Festival in Crescent City is a traditional small-town celebration that draws a big crowd.  Thousands of people show up in Crescent City for the festivities, including a downtown parade (starts at 10 am) that attracted 80 entries last year!  Activities continue along the waterfront all day during the Beachfront Fair, featuring vendor booths, live music and lots more for all ages and best of all, a massive fireworks show begins shortly after 9 pm over the Battery Point Lighthouse.

Another event along the Wild Rivers Coast is one of the most anticipated summer festivals, the annual Southern Oregon Kite Festival at the Port of Brookings Harbor, July 21-22, 10 am to  pm.  The spectacular kite festival will feature two full days of world renowned kite flyers who perform individual and team routines set to music.  Can you imagine seven people each flying an intricate kite, sychronized to music and all seven kites moving in sychronization!  Unbelievable to watch!

The drive from Crescent City to Brookings, OR often includes sightings of Roosevelt elk in fields near the road.  The elk will not be disturbed by having their picture taken and will continue to calmly graze, as they have become accustomed to humans.  It is okay to pull your car to the side of the road, however, it is not advisable to approach them, as they are wild animals and can be unpredictable.  It's exciting to get so close to such large, magnificent, wild creatures and be able to stand there and watch them without scaring them away.  Estimates say there are now at least 200 elk in about five herds between Smith River and the Oregon stateline.  There are about 300 elk between Crescent City and Brookings.
