Judy's What's Happening!
The redwood forests and impressive groves of old-growth trees are one of Del Norte County's claims to to fame. They boast some of the most magnificent and accessible old-growth redwood trees in California. The county's rich history is inextricably tied to these ancient giants through the timber industry. Now, the trees are being preserved for current and future generations to inspire awe and wonder at any age.
One of the must-see areas is Stout Grove. This easy trail boasts some of the largest and most impressive redwoods to be seen. The trailhead is located off Howland Hill Road. The loop trail meanders alongside the sparkling blue-green Smith River. Ferns and clover blanket the ground, giving the grove an other-worldly feel. The trail is short, but some longer options are available for those who are up for more exploration. In the summer, Stout Grove can be accessed from Jedediah Smith Redwoods State Park campground, or further down Highway 199, past Hiouchi, follow the signs to Stout Grove after crossing the Big Flat Bridge or you can just enjoy the great swimming beach below the bridge.
The drive from Crescent City to Brookings, OR often includes sightings of Roosevelt elk in fields near the road. The elk will not be disturbed by having their picture taken and will continue to calmly graze, as they have become accustomed to humans. It is okay to pull your car to the side of the road, however, it is not advisable to approach them, as they are wild animals and can be unpredictable. It's exciting to get so close to such large, magnificent, wild creatures and be able to stand there and watch them without scaring them away. Estimates say there are now at least 200 elk in about five herds between Smith River and the Oregon stateline. There are about 300 elk between Crescent City and Brookings.
